Today is a very important day for many of us who graduated with a BVM in November 1989 (26years ago). It marks the achievement of our first milestone as a collective.
We had our first re-union in 2009 (20 years after graduation) in Naivasha, at the Crayfish camp.It was an overnight stay. - helb news 2016 There, we caught up – we laughed, we relived our lives in college and before we knew it, it was morning and time to get ready to leave. We shared mostly the good stuff about us, our achievements, successes etc. – we bragged a lot.www.helb.co.ke loan disbursement We learned of who were at the top, who were in the middle (mercifully, there was no one at the bottom), and worst of all who had left us. We closed the meeting with an inter-denominational church service and then lunch. It was a most wonderful and elating experience, and we promised each other never to wait that long to meet. Last year, 5 years later, we met at Maanzoni. We were older and wiser – anyonefrom the last re-union could tell. We were fewer, more mature, we laughed less and less loudly, drank less, but shared more and deeper. Alas!We had changed. In addition to sharing our victories, we shared our pains, challenges and (even) failures.  - helb breaking news We encouraged each other and we reached out to each other. Respect hung in the air, respect for self and respect for other. Instead of a church service, we had a think tank meeting – not planned, but somewhat happened – serendipitously. We talked about leaving a legacy, as individuals and as a group. We embraced the group legacy idea and talked about how to touch the lives of those younger than us, those going through the university veterinary school like we did so many years ago, about you. What difference can we make in their lives – not because we are rich, but because together, we can make a difference and we want to make the difference.- helb loan status login We learned about some of the challenges students go through – hunger, inadequate funding, accommodation issues etc., while going through what we know as the most difficult curriculum on campus. - helb deadlineWe agreed that we were going to try and support a few, mentor some, invite some to our homes and work-places and encourage you. To let you know that life will one day be okay and when it is, please reach out to the younger ones. If we all do this, life as a veterinary student and a young practitioner will be better and less lonely . - helb facebook The scrubs that we will present today serve as a symbol of our commitment to support you within our capacity. We do not have resources to support all the five years, we are starting with the 2nd years and we will grow with them. We are currently raising funds for partial scholarships, to begin with, for needy students who do not get adequate funding from HELB.  - helb loan balance We intend to conduct the first disbursement in January after critically vetting the applicants. We realize that there are other several initiatives, but one more initiative will not hurt. We also wish to request other veterinary alumni to emulate our example and join us in making the lives of budding veterinarians in college more bearable than it would be if they continue to navigate this difficult terrain on their own.
