The office has opening hours as it’s a government office with a lunch break from 12.30 to around 2 PM, so make good time to get the birth certificate.

If you are outside Nairobi for instance in Nyeri, Eldoret, Nakuru Embu etc, you can obtain the birth certificates from the District Birth and Death Registries offices.

The Process of Getting the Birth Certificate from Immigration and Registration Offices in Upperhill

When you get to the offices, pick a form B1 for applying the Birth Certificate from the office reception. Take the form to a counter six as indicated by the officials with the following documents:

On returning to the offices as indicated after 2 days, you make payments and you are given a date to pick the birth certificate, if everything checks out. The period varies but it’s around 3 weeks. This process never takes long in the offices.

When a child is below 6 months, the notification slip from the hospital is examined and your details are taken, with all the documents above. Since one will not be charged to obtain the birth certificate for under 6 months baby, one is given the date to take the certificate. Which varies and some say they get one week, others 3 weeks of waiting.

What if you gave birth outside a hospital or at home, how do you get a birth certificate in Kenya?

You should go to the City Hall office on the third floor in CBD area of Nairobi along Mama Ngina Street to register the child. Fill a notification of the birth slip and sign it, then fill file A1. (Get directions from the officials) The office will give you a card with a number named Acknowledgement of Birth. Then you will be sent to the immigration and registration offices in Upperhill. For the people giving birth in the hospital, the hospital informs the registry office of the birth and you can start the process of taking the birth certificate after one month of giving birth.

What should an adult do to obtain a birth certificate in Kenya?

When an adult needs to get a birth certificate, they should go to the sub-chief’s or chief’s offices from their area. You can also opt to go to your area’s District Birth and Death Registry offices. This means that an adult can obtain a birth certificate from Eldoret, Nyeri, Kisumu, Nakuru, Baringo, Nairobi, Mombasa, Embu, Mwingi, Garissa, Kitale or any other section of Kenya.
